Mtskheta has a fascinating religious heritage with much of it still possible to appreciate today.
Mtskhets is a heartland of gorgeous religious buildings, as well as spiritual revalations. There are also old places here to stir the stillest of souls – such as monasteries inhabited by monks, and let’s not forget the stunning Svetitskhoveli cathedral in a small Mtskheta city. Let’s go there together. Life is peaceful here.
Jvari Monastery (6th C.). Jvari monastery is of the most eminent monuments of Georgian architecture as if it was the first example of domed roof architecture . Today, Jvari monastery is under UNESCO protection. From the summit of the mountain where monastery stands, you can enjoy the stunning confluence of the Kura and Aragvi rivers.
Svetitskhoveli, the patriarchal cathedral of Mtskheta, occupies a central place among these monuments. The cathedral differs not only in its artistic value, magnificence and harmony, but in the special role it has played in the history of Georgia. The period of the cathedral’s construction (the beginning of the 11th C.) coincided with the most difficult and interesting epoch in the history of Georgia.
The Shio-Mgvime monastery is a medieval monastic complex and, according to a historic tradition, the first monastic community at this place was founded by the 6th-century monk Shio, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers who came to Georgia as Christian missionaries. St. Shio is said to have spent his last years as a hermit in a deep cave near Mtskheta named Shiomghvime (“the Cave of Shio”) after him.
