Said to a mean “the land of the restless”, the region of Guria is a magical part of Georgia which holds true to its name , with its passionate and fiery locals and natural beauty leaving one , well, restless to discover more .
Poverty , humor and optimism are inseparable in Guria. The locals are well-known for their fervent temper. They would rather reach for a gun and become forest brigands than endure humiliation. This part of Georgia was considered to be a land of almost crazy robbers and sedulous revolutionaries – it often happened so that a man from Guria successfully combined these two professions.
Tourism and subtropics farming are the staples of the economy of a region that is famous its natural wonders, mineral water (Nabeglavi), the coastal health resort Ureki, and tea production.
Gurians think that in their part of the world everything is special. May be they are right. Goergian polyphonic songs are mainly sung by three persons , rarely by four persons, but in Guria songs are sung in seven voices and it is impossible to describe the impressions produced by the sound!
In Soviet Georgia and in the USSR’s locked market tea was produced throughout Western Georgia, but it was Guria where the scale of cultivation reached the highest figure .
The village of Lanchkhuti is also a birthplace and host the annual Easter madness that is the rugby -like a game of Lelo. But it rather archaic and has almost no rules. Lelo Burti (Field Ball) competitions turn into folk celebrations.
The touristic infrastructure is less developed in Guria, with the exceptions of the Black Sea coastline and especially resort Ureki , famous for its magnetic sand having a healing properties .
GOMIS MTA
The mountain resort of Gomis Mta is a true fairy tale in the months of April and May, with its snowy cottages often guilty of leaving visitors breathless. Located at the altitude of 2100m and famous for its pine -forests, panoramic views, Yellow Azela Flowers, beautiful mountains and cottages.
BAKHMARO
A small heavenly village located at the altitude of 2,000 m in western Guria. Bakhmaro offers visitors a potent mixture of sea and mountain air with great health benefits for those respiratory problems, in addition to its heavenly landscape , amazing views, alpine meadows and beautiful pine forests. The highest alpine climate resort in Georgia , with an average annual humidity of 73%, the surrounding mountains are the source of the village’s eponymous spring water , which , like Nabeglavi, is comparable in its chemical composition to the famous Borjomi Water.
