Ajara has been an autonomous republic since 1921.
There are actually 2 different Ajaras for the guests of the country.
One of them is famous for its foreland that lives a full tourist life in summer and gets ready for the tourist season during the rest of each year. It is situated between Kobuleti and the small border village of Sarpi. Batumi, a seaside city on the Black Sea coast, is a developing port and a cultural center.
There is also a different Ajara. It is a mountainous and patriarchal part of Georgia with it’s a wooden houses and minarets built in the green. Here, one can see old people full of energy and curious children, an unchanging place of life and work almost without rest, the migration of herdsmen‘s families to summer pastures and their way back in fall.
Both Ajaras are beautiful!
Ajara is the most subtropical place in subtropical western Georgia. There are different tropical exotic plants in the Botanical Garden in Batumi. They grow like those blossoming in their home region of the Amazonas or Central Africa.
Ajara’s capital, Batumi, is a coastal city that overlooks the Black Sea -a body of water so blue and inviting that the Greeks referred to it as the “Hospitable Sea”. High lights include Piazza Square ‘s dancing fountains and Man and Woman, an 8m-tall rotating sculpture created by Georgian artist Tamara Kvesitadze. The Statue depicts the eponymous duo from Kurban Said’s famous 1937 novel Ali and Nino, and is regarded as a symbol of love and diversity.
Batumi Botanical Garden is a tranquil oasis that features one of the most extensive floral collections in Europe, as well as unforgettable views of the coast. The local flora quite resembles a jungle and it turns out difficult to say where is Botanical Garden ends and where Ajaran landscape begins.
Just outside of the capital is Mtirala Natioanl Park, where the visitors can discover waterfalls and endemic, relict species.
Ajara is also a birdwatcher paradise .Every September, millions of raptors fill the Ajaran skies during their annual migration.
Ajarais excellent destination for winter sports, too. Just 110km from Batumi lies Goderdzi, a ski resort situated 2,200m above the sea level. It’s covered with soft, dry snow from November until the end of May, which makes for great skiing conditions.
Today, Batumi is a beacon of pride for the government of Georgia. Georgian authorities make huge investments in the development of local infrastructure. The city was reconstructed. New hotels have been built. Batumi boulevard was extended by 8km and the airport was renovated.
Mountainous Ajara and its villages belonging to the Keda, Shuakhevi and Khulo regions lead their usual, traditional life
In Ajara, to be exact in Kobuleti region, is a place that one should not forget to mention: Kintrishi Reserve. The area a protects territory was aimed at the protection of chestnut and beech forests and their almost impassable evergreen lower forests.
