Khevsureti is one of the most isolated regions in Georgia. The severity of the places that make up the region – gorges, alpine valleys, rushing streams, rivers, and mountains – gave birth to the kind of rigorous architecture that can be found in the region, including stone fortresses and watchtowers. In the Middle Ages, Khevsureti was home to Khevsur warriors. In fact, at one point, the people who inhabited Khevsureti demanded their freedom, forcing even the King to retreat and exempt the Khevsur population from taxes. In return, they were obliged to protect the country’s borders from raiding neighbors. Historically, the people of Khevsureti lived in free societies, where no class distinctions existed.
Khevsureti is located on the main Caucasian ridge at an altitude of 1,200 – 4,492 meters above sea level. The region can be reached starting in mid-June through October only. During the rest of the year, the roads leading to Khevsureti are closed due to the severe weather conditions and the heavy snow that are common in this part of the country. Geographically, Khevsureti shares a border with Chechnya and Ingushetia to the north, Tusheti to the east, Hevi and Gudamakar to the west, and Pshavi to the south. This journey is tailored to adventure-seekers and those who love nature. As such, during our excursion, tour members will have an opportunity to enjoy the stunning beauty of Argun Gorge along with the unspoiled nature that surrounds it. The existence of abandoned villages and watchtowers dot the landscape in Khevsureti, preserving the spirit of the Middle Ages, and adding an element of romance unseen practically anywhere else in the world. You will also get a chance to speak to hospitable mountaineers we will meet along the way whose wisdom you can feel from a distance. During the tour, we will get around via an off-road vehicle, by trekking on foot and by horseback. We will make stops and enjoy picnics in places where you can fully take in the local beauty and breath the clean mountain air.
